Using penlights
One of the most important basic lessons we teach our low vision patients is to use light to help them do everyday tasks. Good desk lamps are great but there are many situations where they are not practical. In those circumstances a small pocket flashlight can be a very valuable tool for low vision patients. The light is concentrated and can be shone exactly where it is needed. Pocket flashlights are light and inexpensive yet they do the job. We advise patients to keep the flashlight in their pockets so that they can take them out whenever it is needed. Everything from setting thermostat controls to operating CD players to reading a can is made so much easier when some directed light is used.
Some solutions are easier then others.
