Tax exemptions available for people who are legally blind

Many people do not know that they are tax exemptions for people who are legally blind. Here are some specific tips.


United States

People who are legally blind are entitled to an additional $1,550 to use as the Standard Deduction for federal income taxes.


Massachusetts

Massachusetts residents who are legally blind are entitled to a personal exemption to reduce their personal state income tax of $2,200 per person. All that is needed is to have a certificate of legal blindness from the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind.

Cities and towns of Massachusetts offer exemptions to reduce real estate taxes to people who are legally blind. The amount varies from community to community. Sharon, Massachusetts for example offers exemptions which can go up to $875. The form to be filled out and submitted can be found at the following link:


Rhode Island

Many communities in Rhode Island offer exemptions to reduce real estate taxes to people who are visually impaired. The amount varies by community and not all communities offer the exemption. People need to verify their visual impairment by submitting a letter from their eye doctor.

In addition to the legally blind exemption, many of our patients are also eligible for additional exemptions because they are over 65 years of age or a veteran.
