Making getting around in homes safer
We teach that effective lighting always helps. Sometimes, a light as small as a night light can really make a difference. Patients very often get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. Getting up in the middle of the night is pretty disorienting. Add in vision loss and it is easy to understand that the disorientation is increased. A recommendation we have is to place night lights in strategic locations. In addition to the bathroom, night lights placed in the right locations on the way to the bathroom help make navigation much easier. It is not that the light is very strong. Rather, it is that small lights visible in these strategic locations can be seen and helps guide a patient onto the right path.
As we said, something as simple as a small night light can really make a big difference.
