How to make moving food easier
Many of our patients have mobility or balance challenges in addition to their vision loss. The combination makes moving food from counter to table even more difficult. We recommend different solutions to carrying food depending on the particular patient's situation. One suggestion is to have patients put their plates and glasses into a medium sized tray. They can hold the tray with two hands. Another approach is to have the patient get a mobile tea cart that they can use to move plates from the counter to the table. There are baskets that hook on to walkers or rollators that easily can hold a plate of food. If nothing else works we suggest moving the kitchen table closer to the counter. Why should a table be six feet away when having it two feet from the counter makes things so much easier?
Dropping a plate is messy and VERY upsetting. We simply find ways to make things work.
