Help with transportation
Transportation is easily one of the most difficult challenges that low vision patients face. There are many times when low vision patients have to ask friends and relatives for help. However, there is a resource that can be very helpful to patients- paratransit networks. For example, in greater Boston there is The Ride. Many people do not know that low vision alone is not a sufficient criteria to make a person eligible for paratransit. Patients, almost always, have to work through the system to become eligible for paratransit. Paratransit can be an important resource to help many patients get to their doctors' appointments.
While paratransit will never be able to substitute for the ability to drive, it does offer some independence to low vision patients. Perhaps equally important, paratransit enables patients to be a bit less dependent on others which increases their dignity.
