Challenges using hearing aids

Identifying hearing aids is a real challenge for our patients. The newer hearing aids are so tiny. A simple strategy we use is to mark one of the hearing aids so that it will be easier to identify. For example, we place a clear tiny bump dot on the hearing aid for the right ear. Our patients can feel the bump and know to insert it into their right ear. The bump dot is virtually invisible so that it cannot be seen by other people.

Even more challenging is changing hearing aid batteries when you have low vision. Unfortunately if someone is struggling, we have no better suggestion then simply to ask for help. We suggest getting hearing aid batteries at local pharmacies. We have found their staff to be very willing to help especially if the person identifies himself/herself as someone with low vision.
