Sewing

Perhaps one of the most regrettable things is when low vision patients give up sewing.  There are many adaptive techniques that could help patients sew once again.  Good lighting above sewing machines or over favorite sewing chairs can make a big difference.   Sewing machine dials can be marked with raised dots.  A strip of tape in a contrasting color or texture on the bed of the sewing machine can also be used to guide fabrics through the machine.  Hand sewing can be made easier by using needle threaders and self-threading needles ($1.19 for six).  A nice trick is to wave a magnet over the work area to pick any loose needles.  Using vibrant, contrasting colored fabrics also makes sewing easier and more fun.

Whatever it takes, we can help motivated patients sew again.
